Chinese Classic Text OCR Challenge 2022

Introduction

Digital Initiatives Team of The Chinese University of Hong Kong Library has organized the first 2021 Chinese Classic Text OCR Challenge last year to promote the development and exchange of the OCR technology for Chinese classics text.  23 teams from different areas worldwide have joined the Challenge.  This year we will organize the “Chinese Classic Text OCR Challenge 2022” jointly with Academia Sinica Center for Digital Cultures, Taiwan (ASCDC), the Champion of our first Challenge to continue the exchange and promotion on the development and discovery of Chinese materials in academia for digital scholarship research.

Eligibility and Registration 

We welcome teams or individuals from all over the world to join the Challenge in Student Team or Open Team:

  • Student Team: Current students in any institutions; for teams only ONE teacher/staff is allowed
  • Open Team: No restrictions

Please register at https://bit.ly/3rp1ULH (from 14 February 2022 (Mon)) and fill in the Team details and an introduction of the technology being adopted.  Deadline for registration is 14 April 2022 (Thu).

Challenge Rules

All Teams must provide their own platform for Organizer to submit and process the image file(TIFF)through the online interface of the platform.  Contestants therefore must ensure the organizer can smoothly upload the Chinese classics image files for OCR processing and download the result texts daily within the time limit during the Challenge period.  Daily results will be released with assigned team code.

Assessment Criteria

Accuracy on recognized texts and text sequence daily within the time limit.

Result Announcement & Prizes 

Daily results will be sent to individual teams and the Top 3 scores will be published in the Results Page with team code.  Winner list can be found in Results Page and the Winning Teams are required to give a presentation in the online Prize Ceremony.

Prizes:

Both Student and Open Teams will have the top 3 prizes:
Champion: HKD8,000 of e-voucher & e-badge for display
1st Runner up: HKD5,000 of e-voucher
2nd Runner up: HKD3,000 of e-voucher

Intellectual Property

The organiser reserves the ownership of the original source file and contestants will only be authorized to use the files during the Challenge.  They are not allowed to use the original source files for other purposes without the authorisation of the organiser. The copyright of the text files submitted by the contestants belongs to the organiser. 

Participants must ensure that the technology or programs used in the competition file are original by the participants or legally authorized by the owner of the intellectual property rights.  If any third party raises allegations of infringement of intellectual property rights or the legal irregularities, the participants assume all legal responsibility.
