    Organising Parties: CUHK Library and Data Science and Policy Studies, School of Governance and Policy Science, CUHK

    Introduction

    The Data Analytics Practice Opportunity programme fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and data-driven exploration among CUHK students. Co-organised by the CUHK Library and Data Science and Policy Studies, School of Governance and Policy Science since 2024/25, the Programme enables and encourages students to reuse and analyse real-world datasets and digitised records from the University and Library collections, while developing skills in data analytics, visualisation, and storytelling.

    Objectives

    • Promote the reuse of open datasets and digitised records from the CUHK Library and the University collections.
    • Encourage the exploration and innovative use of metadata, archival materials, and digital collections.
    • Foster interdisciplinary research, collaboration, knowledge exchange among students from diverse academic backgrounds.
    • Provide hands-on, project-based learning opportunities in data analytics, visualisation, and the development of data-driven tools and applications.
    • Promote skills in data reuse, data mining, data visualisation, and data storytelling.

    Project Scope

    Participants will:

    • Develop data analytics applications, visualisations, or codes using open datasets and digitised records from the CUHK Library and the University collections.
    • Create a dedicated project webpage to showcase the project’s objectives, methodology, and outcomes.
    • Design a project poster banner for exhibition and promotional purposes.
    • Present project progress and findings during the progress sharing sessions and the final presentation session.

    Eligibility

    • Full-time undergraduate or postgraduate students at CUHK
    • Teams of 2-3 members (candidates with related disciplinary backgrounds are preferred)
    • Approximately 5-6 teams will be selected following an interview

    Selection Criteria 

    1. Knowledge of data analytics 
    2. Programming skills and coding experience 
    3. Relevant subject or domain expertise
    4. Innovative ideas for leveraging University and Library resources to develop a project

    Project Deliverables

    • Final Presentation – A comprehensive presentation delivered during Data Excellence Week, showcasing the project’s background, objectives, methodology, findings, and outcomes. 
    • Project Webpage – A dedicated webpage highlighting the project’s objectives, methodology, and key outcomes.
      • Thumbnail – A branded thumbnail for display on the Digital Scholarship Projects Site.
      • Website Banner – A branded banner for display at the top of the project webpage.
    • Interactive Visualisation or Programming Code – A functional, well-documented interactive visualisation, script, or code that supports data analytics, interpretation, or presentation.
    • Poster Banner – A visually engaging banner that highlights the project’s theme for display and promotional purposes.

    Allowance

    HKD $8,000 per team

    Application

    Applicants must submit the following materials:

    1. A curriculum vitae (CV) and academic transcript for each team member.
    2. A 100-word statement of purpose outlining the proposed research topic and the dataset/digitised record to be used.
    3. A completed online application form submitted individually by each team member.

    Intellectual Property

    According to the University policy, participants are required to assign the intellectual property rights arising from project outputs to the University. Programme participants will also be required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) with The Chinese University of Hong Kong Library. Any original source files or materials provided by the organiser may be used solely for the purposes of the Data Analytics Practice Opportunity Programme and must not be used, reproduced, or distributed for any other purpose without prior authorisation from the organiser. 

    Participants are responsible for ensuring that all codes, visualisations, analyses, and other project outputs developed under the Programme are either their original work or are used with appropriate permission from the intellectual property rights holder. Should any third party raise claims of intellectual property infringement or other legal concerns relating to the project outputs, the participants concerned shall bear full responsibility for resolving such matters and any associated legal liabilities.
