Introduction
For timeline visualization, we employed TimelineJS, which was developed by Northwestern University Knight Lab, to make the timeline for displaying the Hongkong News headline during the Second World War. The timeline shows the headline on all first pages of the Hongkong News from July 1942 to July 1945. System integration with CUHK Digital Repository has been implemented such that by clicking the headline news of the day, users can further access the Hongkong News in Hong Kong Early Tabloid Newspapers collection in full detail. The illustration photos presented in the Timeline were extracted via the YOLO Object Detection methods which can enable the user to gain a preview of the historical events happening on a specific date. Since some issues of the Hongkong News did not contain image, we extracted altogether 203 images from the newspaper for the timeline presentation.
