Transmission

HIST4702 (2022-23) Digital History Project: SARS in Asia

Welcome to the “Transmissions of SARS” page!

We have several works contributing to this page:

The map group created interactive maps using Tableau and GIS to compare the transmission of SARS in Hong Kong and Singapore, to answer the question: Why the outbreak of SARS is especially quick in Hong Kong? Furthermore, the group created maps to show the transmission of SARS through Asia and investigated into the relationship between economic development and the impact of SARS.

You can explore Amoy Garden and its pipe system constructed by the 3D modelling group. Amoy Garden is a private estate built in 1981. There was a SARS outbreak within the estate in late March 2003, the outbreak in Block E was especially severe. In this part, you will understand the structures of of this estate and its pipe system.

Moreover, there are charts created by the data analysis group. The group has analyzed the number of infected cases, both locally and globally. You can find the trends of transmission and their historical insights in the subpages.

You can check the introduction video provided by the video group below to learn the background information of SARS.

Our Works

International Transmission

While SARS broke out unexpectedly in 2003, how did it spread throughout Asia? And how did the first cases break out in different countries?

Data of Transmission in HK

How to use data to find the correlations between the transmission of SARS globally and in Hong Kong?

Transmission in Amoy Garden

During the spread of SARS, Amoy Garden had been very badly affected. What is the relationship between the buildings’ structure and the outbreak of the pandemic?

Singapore and Hong Kong

What can we expect from the spread of SARS in Hong Kong and Singapore, two of the richest cities in Asia?
